British Columbia Cranberry Bush grows 8 to 12 feet tall and as wide. In late spring, it has flat-topped clusters of white flowers (not fragrant), followed by clusters of bright red berries in early fall through winter. Although they hold well and can be used for jellies and preserves, they are also enjoyed by birds. Plants can be so heavily laden with berries that the branches may droop almost to the ground. Fall foliage varies from green to yellow, red, and purple. This is a very handsome shrub for sun or light shade in good, well-drained, but moist soil. Fall Gold is a large, conical, non-crumbling, very sweet, somewhat soft, golden berry. It is excellent for processing and fresh eating. Canes are vigorous, productive, and adaptable to a wide variety of soils. Not recommended for extreme northern areas. First crop ripens in July. Second crop from late August until frost. Zones 4 - 8. Hardy to -25 degrees F . Planting Instructions: Fall Gold can be planted in almost any sort of well-drained soil. Start by digging a large hole big enough to encompass all of the roots of the plant without bending or circling. Raspberries should be planted in the spring. They are usually spaced 2-3 feet in the row with 8-10 feet between the rows. Plant raspberries about one inch deeper than the plant grew in the nursery. The plant, as purchased from the nursery, may be cut back to a few inches as most of the growth will arise from the roots or from the base of the planted cane. Any white sprouts arising from the crown should be covered with soil to prevent burning by the sun. Tayberry is relatively new type of summer fruit, a cross between raspberry and blackberry. The fruit looks like long raspberry and fully mature it has deep red to burgundy color. The taste is aromatic and sweet, though somewhat sharp as in blackberries. They are best eaten fresh but you can store them frozen or use for preserves or puddings. Tayberry is a self-fertile plant fruiting on last year's canes. They need support as they cannot climb or vine. Before winter remove all old wood and leave only this year's shoots that will bear fruit the next year. It is soil tolerant but adding organic material will result in stronger plant and better fruit. The soil has to be well-drained. Grow in full sun. Root barrier is recommended to keep unwanted shoots from wandering around. Fully hardy. Growth habits The tayberry will grow reasonably well in many soils. Tayberries produce the most berries when in full sun and in well drained soil with a high amount of organic materials. Supporting the canes is not crucial, but it will help prevent diseases by improving the air flow between branches. Tayberries should be ready to harvest in early July. Frost is rarely a problem, as tayberries flower late in the season; plants need protection below -15 degrees Fahrenheit. Like many plant hybrids, tayberries show good disease resistance, and it has been shown to be resistant to late yellow rust. Nutritional content Like many other berries, the tayberry is low in calories, high in fibre, and like other bramble fruits they contain antioxidants. Uses The tayberry can be eaten fresh or used for making jams, pies, or wine.
